Outside outtakes

During the beginning of 2003 some previously unreleased outtakes from the Outside-sessions saw the light of day. Bnetter essexboy (aka 100% from teenagewildlife) got his hand on an 1 hour long disc from these session (more information about this here) and he kindfully offered some pieces from this disc. Within this context some more recordings from that area got released from different sources. Just recently a bootleg called "9.Outside" including some of these songs has been released.

from essexboy/100PCB:

you should have around 25/30 mins of Outside material, a lot are the same clips. some clips are also patched together.

from Reeve Gabrels on www.revz.net:
"not only did i play on it but i co-wrote it.
it is part of the larger, improvised opera that some of us (at least myself and eno) feel "outside" should have been. i wonder where this guy got a hold of this?"

well, !00%brit is being a bit over the top when he says 8 hours. it was under 4 hours in its pre edited state. and it didn't get longer after it was mixed.
the track is from after the mix sessions at westside studios in london in the summer of '94.
the band was db, eno, mike garson, erdal kizilcay, sterling cambell and myself. that piece is an excerpt from the larger 3 hour + plus improvised opus we created in late march /early april '94. we hoped that it would have come out intact and uncompromised by financial/comercial pressures. it would have been a very serious musical statement (and maybe even pissed more people off than tin machine).
instead it was chopped up and used as short character pieces on "outside". it's easy to tell which songs those are on outside by reading the songwriting credits.(any song on that cd with 5 writers or more came from group improvisation).
gary oldman and i used to comiserate on how your best stuff.... your most real and honest work seems to be what ends up on the cutting room floor. uh huh.
we ended up recording 4 more commercial "songs" in nyc with a different band (carlos, yossi fine, joey baron and myself). ah, compromise.
anyway, it's my guess that this was stolen/copied by someone working at westside studios at the time who had access to tapes as it was my understanding that no one was given copies of "the enemy is fragile"... among others.
i'd love to know the truth concerning what 100%git really has... he might even have alternate mixes i don't (and vice versa).

from Adam at Teenage Wildlife:
"Outside was to be originally released as two CDs and was to include material from a long jam session / operatic piece called Inside.
Later, the material was scheduled as a companion piece to the original material, then later again, it was to be called 2.Contamination although Contamination was originally a different project altogether (a sequel to Outside, rather than an extension)"
These are the songs I found on the web plus the information I collected from BNet/Conversation Piece and bowieaudio.com  about these snippets (none of them are confirmed)::
1=5 (1.824kb) (03:53 min)

2=6 "OK riot" (830kb) (01:45 min)

"OK Riot"?, then we're back into another (but different) "We'll Creep Together" refrain

3=7 "I'd rather be chrome" (1.824kb) (03:53 min)

"7" has a funny ending. You hear parts of "Leon Takes Us Outside" and Bowie talking to a non-authentic audience

4=8 "The leek soldiers" (886kb) (01:53 min)

8 is part of creep and out1. its the transition between them.

out "I am with name" uncut demo (4.848kb) (10:25 min)

I Am With Name/Unknown (Bowie/Eno/Gabrels/Garson/Kizilcay/Campbell): the CD opens with a familiar song, 'I Am With Name', but instead of the 1. Outside's four minutes, this version lasts well over 10 minutes. At 4'00" into the track, Bowie launches into a rap which repeats phrases such as "I won't keep it/It will hide me/He should take them/I won't tell it/She can't take it/He won't do this/He said tell it/She said spot this/He should do this/He should be there" and "It will kill that/He should hide me/I won't hide me/She can't be there/I won't tell it/They won't eat me." At 6'10" Nathan Adler is introduced in a segue which is nearly identical to the first segue from 1. Outside: "Old Touchschriek was the main name-server/Suspected of being a shoulder server or faint a hack/This old guy didn't know from shit about challenge response systems/He was way back in the age of cellular clones/We knew that Ramona A Stone was selling interest drugs, magic cookies [...] But wait, I'm getting ahead of myself/Let me take you back to when it all began." Next is the 'Ramona A Stone' segue that opens the song on 1. Outside, but again with slightly different lyrics. The segue and the song ends with the spoken "We'll creep together, you and I. We know who the small friends are. My, this is a crazy world. At this time, you could think of me as a 'syllable'. Someone who eats their own words".

out1 (3.168kb) (06:45 min)

"out1.mp3" has this beautiful piano and backing vocals. I wonder who they are. Eno and Reeves? With a German accent, Bowie tells us, "Someday the internet may become an information super highway." And then, "Don't make me laugh!!"

leon aka "The Enemy is Fragile" (1.947kb) (04:09 min)

The Enemy Is Fragile (Bowie/Eno/Gabrels/Garson/Kizilcay/Campbell): track eight (4'10") starts off with "Hallo Leon, would you like something really fishy?". On the Stamford Hill site, Reeves Gabrels identified this track as 'The Enemy Is Fragile'. "The enemy is always there/You could have been fighting to the death, but no!/Well, wrap up, and you'll go dancing, Leon!/Dance fishy?/Something in her mouth/There's something in her mouth/Something mysterious".

out3 "We'll creep together/The chrome" (2.360kb) (05:01 min)

here's an order, they flow into one another:

1. out
2. we'll creep together
3. out1 (this one fades out)

leon_15_minutes.rm (1.864kb) (15:10 min)

out.mp3 + we'll creep together.mp3 = leon.rm

from savagejaw.com:
"A collection of demo's and outtakes from the 1.Outside recording sessions. This recording was reportedly stolen and eventually found it's way onto CDR. There's no official track listing, but some titles suggested are - Hello Leon - We'll Creep Together - (I Wanna Be) Chrome - OK Riot. How close these are is anyone's guess. The sound quality is very good (except track 9), but beware of inferior quality CDR's made from the low bit-rate MP3's that were available for download first."
